Chapter Eight

Warm rays from the sun poured through the window and awoke Ethan. He yawned and glanced at the Regulator clock on the wall. Past nine o’clock. Damn, had he slept… Next to him, the bed was empty. For a moment panic gripped him. Did Daric leave? Then he smelled the bacon and coffee and smiled. Food. After sex and sleep, one of Ethan’s favorite things to do—eat. He had worked up a ravenous appetite.

He stood and stretched again, then reached for his jeans and slipped them on. Leaning against the window, he let the bright autumn sun warm his skin as his thoughts drifted to last night. In his more than six decades of existence and near five decades of sexual experiences, nothing came close to last night. To all of yesterday, really. Nothing at all. From the wild, ass-pounding sex to sucking each other off, to the languid lovemaking of last night, he could not recall a more perfect day. The memory was potent enough to carry him through in the lonely years to come.

All the signs were there of a mate connection. The immediate attraction, the scenting, the hot sex. The deeper emotional pull. Considering in the past he didn’t give a flying fuck what anyone thought of him or his behavior or standoffish ways, he’d held back showing how he truly felt with Daric. Afraid of rejection? Maybe. Since the fire, he’d changed. He knew that deep down. A lot of his alpha, who-gives-a-shit bravado had been lost that day along with half of his face and arm.

Besides, the mate connection—if accepted—lasted until one or the other died. A hell of a commitment. One he really was not sure he wanted to make.

Ethan shook the muddled thoughts from his mind and headed toward the kitchen. As he emerged from the hallway, he noticed two gym bags sitting by the front door. Daric was leaving? Christ, it felt as if someone had reached in and pulled out his heart. He absently rubbed his chest. Well, so be it. Schooling his features into their usual cold indifference, he strode into the kitchen.

Daric turned from the stove, a frying pan of scrambled eggs clutched in his hand.

“You’re just in time. While I was cooking I realized I really know nothing about you: How you like your eggs—if you even like eggs—or if you drink tea or coffee, or not. I have a lot to learn.”

Ethan pulled out the chair and sat. “Why? You’re leaving. Why would you care what my breakfast preferences are?” The words were coldly spoken. Ethan didn’t care.

Daric walked to the table and scraped half the eggs on his plate. “I was only here for one or two nights. After we eat, we can finish up the paperwork and I can head back to town if you want.”

Ethan didn’t answer and ignored Daric’s motions, of bringing platters of bacon and toast to the table.

“I made coffee. Is that all right? Or would you prefer tea?” Daric asked.
